Being a chicken "NUT" from childhood, eager to learn, and later willing to share his knowledge to help other youngsters, Colonel Hempel devoted his retirement days to writing and assisting youngsters through the pages of Grit and Steel magazine.
For more than a decade the writer, a retired U.S. Army Colonel (from January 1964 until his demise on January 15, 1975) he wrote to answer many a question and many a thought to assist in raising, breeding and testing gamefowl.
By special arrangement with Grit and Steel magazine, excerpts from "Especially for Beginners" will be appearing regularly on The Pit Master.
